Despite individual efforts and stand-out stats, multiple errors and poor hitting plagued the Greenwave in last week’s action. It started with a mercy ruling at Fontainebleau on the 12th that was followed by a close game against Covington Tuesday night that resulted in a painful one-run loss. Finally, the shut-out by Mandeville Wednesday night seemed to put the lid on play-off chances.

The Greenwave felt a little better after they applied their own pressure to Holden, resulting in a 10-run rule win. The light was only a flicker, however, when errors against St. Paul turned what may have been a close game into another hard 6-1 loss.

In the last four district games, the Greenies were responsible for 16 errors and a total of 22 hits. With one remaining on Monday night, it is unlikely that the Wave will extend their season.

An early hit by Dylan Meyers would go a long way to tie it up in the first, and both teams fought hard to hold on until Brady Bass slugged a single to make Taylor Denham’s fifth inning double well worth the effort when he scored.

According to kenramsey.com, Ponchatoula is ranking just outside of the threshold for playoffs at 36th in the state.

Tonight, the Greenwave stopped a three-game losing street with a 7-0 shutout win over Slidell. Tyler Robinson pitched seven strong innings and got plenty of support from his offense to give the Greenies a much-needed lopsided win.

Last week, the Greenwave lost on the road in a mercy ruling at Covington, took a loss at home against Mandeville and in a battle for the W, lost to St. Paul in extra innings.

“I was really proud of the way they competed at St. Paul,” said Coach Mark Gosnell. “Our guys fought hard the whole game.”

The disappointing loss catapulted the Greenwave into the game against Slidell, however. The boys came out swinging and had a team total of 11 hits, three of which came off the bat of Shayne Narro and two from Austin Henderson. Narro and Blake Falconello had two RBIs, and Henderson and Brady Bass had one each.

“Tonight was a great win,” said Gosnell. “Tyler Robinson was great on the mound. Our hitters battled to get the lead early. I’m glad to see us bounce back after a tough loss on Saturday.”

The Greenwave is back at home at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Loranger.

Blake Falconello hit a solo homerun and a three-run double off the left center field fence tonight to lead the Greenwave over Northshore. But it was a true team effort that was the crushing blow and determined this win on the road.

A couple of walks and Greenwave errors cracked the door for Northshore, but the Greenwave bats answered on both occasions.

Tyler Corbin started the fifth inning with a double for the first of six hits. Shayne Narro followed right behind, doubling to score Corbin. Brady Bass bunted to ad

The teams played identical the first five innings, trading licks and tying the game three times before the sixth when Dylan Meyers’s deep fly ball to right was mishandled and allowed Shayne Narro to score from first base. Each team scratched out a run in the seventh, but Tyler Robinson put out the fire and stranded a runner on third when Trey Foster fielded a weak ground ball to get the final out at first and secure the victory.

“Tonight was a great win for our program,” said Head Coach Mark Gosnell. “It’s hard to come over to Northshore and come away with a victory. Our offense battled and got big hits when we needed them, and Tyler Robinson came in and pitched some great innings of relief for us tonight and picked up a win.”

Ponchatoula will host Fontainbleau at home Friday at 6:30.

Landyn Ragan was taking batting practice today after suffering a hart hit in the mouth at Saturday’s game against East Ascension. When the game was tied 4-4 in the eighth inning, Ragan was hit by a line drive that resulted in a trip to the emergency room and four stitches.

The Green Wave still pulled out the win in the 10th inning of the game. Quenton Landry relieved Ragan in the eighth inning and allowed no runs for the remainder of the game. Brady Bass got the win for Ponchatoula, starting the game and allowing three runs over three innings.

Shayne Narro, Brett Hutson and Blake Falconello had two hits each, and Ragan, Trey Foster and Tyler Robinson also had hits for the team. Falconello and Josh Magee led the team with quality-at-bats with five each.

Earlier in the day, Narro pitched a shut-out 9-0 win over Woodlawn High. Falconello and Taylor Denham each posted two hits for the team during that match-up, accounting for half the team’s hits for the day. Falconello and Denham each also had three RBIs for the game.

These wins followed up a hard loss on Thursday night that sent the Greenies on a long ride home after a mercy ruling. The 14-1 loss to St. Amant wasn’t the way the Greenwave wanted to open the tournament, especially after a stinging 9-8 loss to Acadiana at home on Tuesday. The double win on Saturday made the losses hurt a little less.

Ponchatoula begins district play on Tuesday night at Northshore High. Ponchatoula is currently 27th in power rankings, and Northshore is ranked 21st.

The Greenwave lost to Newman and South Lafourche last week in the Gateway Ford Tournament hosted at Athletic Park. On Monday, the Greenwave lost to Walker for the third loss, and the fourth came to Franklinton on Thursday to start play in the Franklinton Tournament.

The Greenwave couldn’t get a hit at the right time in Thursday’s game against Franklinton when they lost 7-1. Landyn Ragan took the hard loss despite pitching a solid game and allowing only six hits. Untimely errors allowed Franklinton to steadily increase its lead and sting the Greenwave.

But that was all in the past when the Ponchatoula team awoke on Saturday morning. The Greenwave got a much-needed blowout win against Pine that halted the losing streak. Senior Brady Bass pitched four scoreless innings to grab the afternoon win against Pine, and junior Jervenski “Duck” Johnson closed that game by adding a fifth-column zero of his own. Bass allowed only one hit for the game.

The bats were clicking as the team collected 14 hits against Pine. With a 17-0 win resulting from the mercy rule in the fifth, the Greenwave regained lost confidence that propelled the team into the Sumner match-up later in the evening.

In the Sumner game, Bass, Blake Falconello and Shayne Narro paced the Greenwave’s nine-hit attack with two hits each. Josh Magee’s two-run double in the third inning gave Robinson the breathing room to continue pitching scoreless innings.

“Today was a great day for our baseball team,” said Coach Mark Gosnell. “Our pitching was outstanding today. Brady Bass and Tyler Robinson were magnificent on the mound today. We also had a great day defensively. We are hoping we got our confidence back at the plate. We hit a lot of balls hard in both games. I’m proud of the way we responded today after the loss to Franklinton on Thursday.”

A walk-off home run by Dylan Myers ended the match-up between Sacred Heart and Ponchatoula in the Greenwave’s Friday tournament showing. Contributing to that win was Ryan Byers’s own three-run homer in the bottom of the second and RBIs from Shayne Narro and Tyler Corbin.

Landyn Ragan pitched six strong innings with 11 strikeouts and despite not getting the win, he positioned the team for the victory.

Other highlights included two successful bunts from Brady Bass to advance Taylor Denham who scored both times and a connect from Ragan to Blake Falconello to tag a baserunner at first and another from Falconello to Narro to prevent a steal at second.
